Abstract

Holistic Tribology for Sustainable and Efficient Motion explores how tribological design can substantially reduce friction, wear, energy losses, and CO2 emissions across the entire product life cycle. A sustainable energy and mobility ecosystem requires CO2-neutral energy, a transition from fossil-based to renewable sources, and products with a minimized CO2footprint and handprint. To achieve this, products must also be highly energy-efficient in use, making the selection of the right materials, coatings, and lubricants an integral part of product design from the beginning.

Because friction is determined by the entire system, all relevant requirements must be considered together. Customized surface modifications, introduced early in the design phase, can improve component lifetime, efficiency, and functionality without changing dimensions. Tribological coating systems with high hardness and toughness further enhance durability.

Holistic tribology is therefore essential for enabling a CO2-neutral and sustainable energy and mobility ecosystem. It is a key enabler for the design of tailor-made systems for sustainable and efficient motion.
